What it means to be Blessed

I came across a Facebook post that invited me to “like” the photo if I a feel like I am “blessed.” The photo included a very well dressed- wealthy looking person with Gold rings. I had to check myself for a moment because it just didn’t seem right or align itself with what I know about God. Is being blessed really God providing you with wealth? Can we say that we are wealthy because God has “blessed us”? Let see:

Matthew 5
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

What this passage says is that you are blessed if you are poor in spirit, in mourning, meek, hunger and thirst for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemaker, receive persecution, insulted, and spoken out against.

When you see someone being insulted, someone poor in spirit, or someone persecuted, the first thing you think is not, “man! They are so blessed right now.” That’s the way God see’s them. God says that when we are dealing with these things we are blessed. I’m not saying having money is wrong, I’m saying it is nothing God says that you are blessed for having in the above scripture.

It’s been a rough week for La Micia and I. I read these scriptures about what it means to be blessed and it definitely helps our perspective. La Micia lost her job, a few of the adaptations have been difficult (new language, culture, adjustment, ect) and we’ve just been feeling it. When I read about what it means to be blessed, its so comforting because we are feeling a lot of those same emotions right now. We feel poor in spirit which means that “[ours] is the kingdom of God”, we feel like we are mourning which means “[we] will be comforted”, we feel insulted for the sake of Christ so that means “great is [our] reward in heaven”!
